Herb Brooks XL Hockey League aims to keep high school athletes on the ice

Herb Brooks XL Hockey League

The new Herb Brooks XL Hockey League will debut in the fall of 2012

Hockey is a demanding sport. Anybody involved in the game knows that. For some people, unfortunately, that commitment is sometimes so great that it pushes them away from the sport completely.

That needs to change -- and the Herb Brooks Foundation has taken initiative.

If hockey is to continue growing -- even here, in hockey heaven Minnesota -- there needs to be more opportunities available for people to play the game while still being able to focus on their primary goals, activities, sports, academics, etc.

XL Hockey League and the Herb Brooks Foundation have come together to do just that. The Herb Brooks Foundation announced Thursday morning a new program, the Herb Brooks XL Hockey League, geared toward high school students in Minnesota who want to be part of a less-demanding hockey experience while experiencing the same great game and all its glory.

From the Herb Brooks Foundation:

"The Herb Brooks XL Hockey League is a no-check hockey league that plays games once a week on Sundays at various hockey arenas throughout the entire metro area. Teams are formed from every conference in the Minnesota State High School League and players can sign up individually or request to play with friends from previous hockey teams. There are two levels of play that students can choose from so anyone who wants to play hockey can play.

The Gold Division has many players with high school hockey experience who chose to quit hockey to concentrate on other sports such as football, lacrosse, baseball, tennis, etc.

The Silver Division offers players with less experience the chance to grow their game so they can continue to play a lifetime of hockey.

Players who are interested in playing in the league can register today by going to and downloading the registration form, download the brochure here below or stop by your local rink to pick up a brochure.
