Backes tallied 73 points in three seasons with the Minnesota St. Mavericks. He was selected in the second round (62nd overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by St. Louis. He also won a silver medal with the 2010 U.S. Olympic team.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound forward amassed 75 points (29 goals, 46 assists) as a senior for Spring Lake Park High School in 2002. He was a Mr. Hockey finalist.
