Rosemount graduate signs NHL deal

Minnesota Duluth Bulldog and 2008 Rosemount High School graduate J.T. Brown signed a two-year NHL entry-level contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday.

Brown, who just finished his sophomore season at UMD, could make his NHL debut on Saturday against the Winnipeg Jets. He was a highly-coveted college free agent and attended the Minnesota Wild prospect camp this past fall as an invitee.

He scored 40 goals and 44 assists for 84 total points in two seasons with the Bulldogs. He helped Minnesota Duluth win their first-ever NCAA National Championship last year and was named the Frozen Four's Most Outstanding Player.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound forward brings a versatile skill set that Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman found too appealing to pass up.

From the Lightning:

“We are pleased to announce JT’s signing with the Lightning this evening,” said Yzerman. “He has all the top characteristics we look for in a player, including high skill and compete levels. We’re glad he chose to play for the Lightning and we look forward to getting him in the lineup as quickly as possible.”

And Brown's reaction.

“I am excited about this opportunity to come to Tampa Bay and play for the Lightning,” said Brown. “I see the organization as a great fit for me and although I had a tough decision to make, I definitely feel it was the right one. I can’t wait to get started.”

Brown spent two seasons with Waterloo in the USHL before joining the Bulldogs.
