Breck once again is atop Class A and will likely be the team to beat come title time.
With the Boy’s MSHSL State tournament just around the corner March 7-10, Minnesota Hockey Journal took a time out to take a look at some of the top players and teams in the state this season and just who might be lacing ‘em up in St. Paul in early March.
In AA, it appears Duluth East is clearly the team to beat. With a lineup comprised largely of returners from last year’s team that lost in double overtime to Eden Prairie, the Hounds have the talent, depth and experience to go all the way.
Minnetonka has been ranked among the state's best all season.
On the A side, Breck (Section 2A) and St. Thomas Academy (Section 4A) are the teams to beat. To the north, Hermantown (Section 5A) and Duluth Marshall (Section 7A) each have good teams and should earn a trip south in March. Thief River Falls (Section 8A) should be in a position to make another trip to the state tournament and to the south, Rochester Lourdes stands tall in Section 1.
On the AA girls’ side, Benilde, Hill-Murray, Anoka, Minnetonka and Roseville have been the teams to beat most of the season. Edina, Elk River and Mounds View have also made some noise. Breck, Warroad, Thief River Falls and South St. Paul are at the top of the Class A teams, while Mound-Westonka, Blake, Orono and Red Wing have been ranked among the top this season as well.
Duluth East captured the Schwan Cup Championship in December, and the Hounds have their eye on the state title in March.
