Construction for Wadena's new arena looks to be moving smoothly after the town was ravaged by a tornado in June 2010, causing an estimated $35 million in damage.

We featured Wadena's both tragic and uplifting story in our March 2011 issue, in which the storm left a tight-knit hockey-loving town without an ice rink. Youth teams travel to neighboring communities for ice time. The high school teams make 40-mile treks to Long Prairie to keep playing hockey.

“It kind of looked like a war zone,” boys' high school coach Dan Savoie said in the March 2011 article. “The skyline didn’t look the same. It didn’t look like Wadena. It still doesn’t look like Wadena.”

Slowly but surely, that's all starting to change. Donations and support have kept Wadena's road to recovery alive, but it's the community's spirit that refuses to die.
